Tomorrow I will celebrate the one year anniversary of my sacral fracture. It is hard to believe that one little spill on my bike last year could have derailed my training and racing to the extent that it did, but luck (or poor luck, in this case) unfortunately has an important role in the profession that I have chosen.
To be honest, things were starting to become a bit “pear-shaped”, in the words of my coach, before I fractured my pelvis. Vicky Holland asserts that former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd stole my mojo (so is it back now that he is out of office?) and I seem to think that it stemmed from bad karma following involuntary pigeon slaughter on the bike path. Either way, March 2010 was a training low-point involving a sinus infection, overtraining, a broken bike, a fracture and almost getting kicked out of the squad following a heated tug-of-war with Darren. Thankfully I’m still in the squad, my body has healed and everything is falling into place at last. It took a year, but better late than never...
Tomorrow I will celebrate my one-year anniversary with a toast to my drama-filled 2010 season and be grateful for every day that I can train without injury, illness, squabbles with coaches and lost mojo/ dead pigeons. It was a tough year, but I’d like to think that I’ve grown through the process and am a better athlete for it. Thanks to everyone for your support through the rough patches! I hope to make you proud this year!
